Tech Spotlight: Mercedes-Benz Fully Variable 4Matic AWD

Okay, one more time. The 4Matic system in these cars is specially designed for this class of vehicle with its transverse mounted engines. There’s a Power Takeoff Unit (PTU) in the seven-speed dual-clutch transmission and a multi-plate clutch in the rear differential. The driveshaft couples and decouples based on a difference in speed between front and rear axles.

We get some firsthand experience with Mercedes-Benz’s fully variable 4Matic all-wheel-drive system, freshly added to the B250 hatchback and CLA 250 sedan, Mercedes’ compact, entry-level cars.
