General Motors and Toyota have recalled more vehicles to replace faulty Takata airbags.
The Toyota/Lexus campaign now covers more than 400,000 vehicles in Canada, including the Corolla, Matrix, Sequoia, Tundra, and SC 430. That figure is up from 366,860 covered in a 2015 recall, and a big jump from the 75,000 included in Toyota’s original Takata campaign.
General Motors has also bumped up the number of Pontiac Vibes under recall. The latest campaign, issued earlier this month, covers 60,672 examples of the little hatchback from model years 2003 through 2008, up from 55,595 affected in a 2015 recall, and 11,000 included in the original 2013 campaign. There are a number of other recent recalls to tell you about, too.
First up is a campaign to fix rear seatbelt buckles in Ford Transit vans that could prevent the belt from staying latched in a crash.
Ford is also recalling some Taurus police interceptor models to have auxiliary battery wiring inspected. Misrouted cables could be damaged and short out and become a fire hazard.
Over at Hyundai, upscale Genesis and Equus models from model years 2011 through 2013 are under recall for windshield wiper motor seals that could fail, allowing water into the housing that could cause corrosion and eventual wiper failure. Dealers are being instructed to replace the motor with a redesigned unit.
Nearly 1,000 Maserati Ghibli and Quattroporte models are being called back to dealers for new driver’s side floor mats and accelerator pedal covers that may interfere with each other and cause the throttle to become stuck open.
Frozen brake booster relays are the reason behind a Nissan Leaf recall affecting 647 examples of the all-electric hatchback sold between 2013 and 2015. The fault tends to occur after the car is parked in freezing temps for “a prolonged period of time,” and can result in increased brake pedal effort, which affects stopping distances. Nissan’s fix is to install new brake control unit software; the automaker says that if the fault happens, the driver would be tipped off by a brake system warning light.
A small number of Ford F-150 pickups with the optional massaging seat feature have airbag occupant classification software that may not correctly identify a seat occupant as an adult when the massager is turned on. Ford dealers will update the occupant classification system’s software.
A few GM vehicles have driver frontal airbags that may not deploy properly in high-speed crashes. Dealers will replace the driver’s side airbag module.
Jaguar XF sedans from 2014 and 2015 powered by the 2.0L engine have idler pulleys that could fail, causing the power steering to cut out and increasing the amount of effort required to steer the car. Dealers are being instructed to replace the fault-prone pulleys with a redesigned part.
Some Dodge Dart models with a manual transmission are missing fault detection software designed to monitor engine performance and prevent unintended power power surges. Without that software, the car could exhibit “unintended acceleration” and increase the risk of a crash. Dodge says the driver can override such an event by applying the brakes or disengaging the clutch; nonetheless, it is instructing its dealers to reprogram the engine control unit in the 91 affected cars.
In a small number of Ram Promaster vans with the 3.0L diesel engine, a stability control system deactivated by the driver may not reactivate after the engine is turned off and restarted, resulting in the system remaining off when the driver believes it to be active. The fix is to have dealers reprogram the vans’ anti-lock brake module; in vans with this fault, the “ESC off” warning light would illuminate.
In some Chrysler 200 models that have had a front passenger seat occupant classification sensor or seat cushion foam replaced, the classification system’s function may be affected, because those two things were to have been both replaced at the same time with a calibrated set. In cars which only had one of those two components replaced, dealers will install a full set of replacement parts.
Finally, there is one 2016 BMW X1 out there with an improperly assembled front passenger seat. In a crash, the seat and seatbelt may not protect the occupant as intended, increasing the risk of injury. The dealer is being instructed to replace the screws that secure the backrest and lower seatbelt anchor.
