Toyota Canada has announced a recall for its popular RAV4 compact crossover to fix a suspension flaw that could lead to a loss of vehicle control.
The recall covers nearly 22,000 examples of the RAV4, and a handful of Lexus HS 250h sedans and addresses rear suspension link arms that could separate. This is a follow-up to a 2013 recall of more than 100,000 vehicles for the same problem, and it’s from that bulletin that we get a better idea of what could go wrong.
The suspension arms in question have locking nuts on them used to align the rear wheels, and rust formation can wear the threads on the arm and allow it to pull away from the rest of the suspension assembly. In that recall, cars on which no rust was found got a treatment of epoxy to seal the metal and prevent future corrosion, but the current campaign instructs dealers to replace all affected parts that were left and simply epoxied the last time around.
This is actually the third recall for this problem; the first campaign happened in 2012.
Affected RAV4 models affected were sold as 2006 through 2011 models; the Lexus HS 250h was a short-lived hybrid sedan sold only in 2010 and 2011.
