Jeep has just announced that the not-exactly-an-off-road-slouch Wrangler is getting a new model that adds even more rock crawling and mud slinging capability. The Rubicon Recon adds beefier front axle tubes, revised rock rails, and stronger differential covers. It’s also available in two and four-doors, starting at $47,040.
The Rubicon Recon is based on the 2017 Wrangler Rubicon and Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon, which already have electronic disconnects for the front sway bar, locking differentials front and rear, and come with BFGoodrich off-road tires. The new trim has changes to strengthen its off-road cred even more by using stronger front axle tubes with heavier-duty end forgings. The differential covers are stronger cast pieces. The stronger covers help protect the differentials from rocks and trail obstacles and add more strength to the axle housing. The transfer case is from the Rubicon and allows a 73.1:1 crawl ratio with the six-speed manual transmission. Underneath, the body-protecting rock rails have been shortened to allow 35-inch tall tires to be fitted.
The Recon comes with a 13mm lift and special 17-inch wheels shod with 32-inch off-road oriented BF Goodrich KM mud-terrain tires. Finishing the look are a low-gloss black grille, off-road bumpers, and Jeep badging. The front bumper is ready for a winch and has removable end caps to help clear obstacles.
While crawling over boulders, passengers can listen to the eight-speaker stereo while sitting in heated leather seats. The seats get an embroidered Rubicon logo and there is red contrasting stitching throughout the cabin. Finally, there is a unique gauge cluster with extra read-outs including oil pressure and temperature readings for the transmission and coolant.
