Lexus is showing off the hybrid version of their new flagship LS sedan at the Geneva Motor Show this week. The LS 500h follows on the heels of the swoopier twin-turbo v6 powered LS 500 that debuted at the Detroit show in January.
The new hybrid gets Lexus’ Multi Stage Hybrid system that combines a naturally aspirated 3.5L v6 and two electric motors to generate 354 hp. The system has a four-speed gearbox for the hybrid system that can combine with the CVT for 10 virtual ratios. The hybrid system should help further Lexus’ goal of making the LS whisper-quiet.
The new lithium-ion battery is 20 percent smaller than the last generation’s but has more power density for more range. Without giving solid numbers, Lexus says that fuel economy will be improved over the previous LS 600h, and its overall average of 11.5 L/100km.
The new LS is built on a new Lexus platform, shared with the all-new LC coupe. The new LS gets longer, gaining 33mm in length and now having the most rear leg room of any LS, including the previous long-wheelbase models.
The styling is little changed from the non-hybrid model. It has the bold new Lexus spindle grille, with some added hybrid badges and the blue badge surround that Lexus and Toyota hybrids use. The interior looks like it has some slight changes as well, with more blue and hybrid gauges.
Look for the rest of the car’s luxury and safety features to come over from the non-hybrid, with Lexus’ new pedestrian detection and active steering making an appearance, as well as the massive 24.0-inch head-up display. Back seat passengers will like the reclining rear seat, raised ottoman, and Shiatsu massage.
Expect the LS 500h to arrive later this year, with pricing to follow closer to the on-sale date.
